Program Overview

TNTP Academy - DC is part of a national network of teacher preparation programs dedicated to training excellent teachers. First launched by TNTP in Louisiana as the Louisiana Practitioner Teacher Program in 2001, TNTP Academy now prepares new teachers for licensure in 7 states and the District of Columbia. It is among the first teacher preparation programs in the country to require all teachers to demonstrate their effectiveness in the classroom in order to be recommended for state certification.

A Rigorous, Classroom-Centered Curriculum
Teaching in high-need schools is challenging for even the most talented new teachers, but few programs give graduates the tools to be effective in this setting. TNTP Academy is specifically designed to prepare new teachers without a formal education background for the challenges of high-need classrooms. The program builds on the deep content knowledge the teachers already possess by preparing them with the practical skills and strategies needed to teach it.

The heart of TNTP Academy is our intensive Teaching for Results (TfR) seminar series. TfR seminars focus on strong content knowledge and the use of student assessments to set goals, inform instruction and measure progress so all students meet or exceed grade-level standards. The program is designed to arm new teachers with the practical skills and strategies needed to improve student achievement, particularly among students who may lag several grade levels behind.

Seminar groups are organized by content area and, when possible, by grade level. Groups typically consist of 10-15 teachers and one Seminar Leader, who is an experienced and effective educator versed in the DC and Common Core Content Standards and familiar with the local educational landscape. For the 2011-12 school year, seminars meet twice per month from the beginning of the school year through May and last three hours long.

At the end of their first year, teachers who meet all program requirements and demonstrate that they are effective will be eligible for state certification. While this is a high bar, we are confident that TNTP Academy’s rigorous training and personalized support will help most teachers reach it. Principals and district officials will know that teachers who earn certification through TNTP Academy are not simply certified but also have a proven track record of getting results.
